Sagamore Creek Headlands (Goodwin Trail): 2 mile, 105 ft elevation gain. Easy walk/hike in south Portsmouth. Woods and estuary views. Parking and start of trail at Urban Forestry Center at 45 Elwyn Road. Forestry Center has other shorter walks and self-guided hikes.
Little Harbor Loop Trail: 1.8 mile easy walk/hike in Portsmouth. Woods. Trailhead and parking are at the Shoals Marine Lab on Creek Farm Road, which is off Little Harbor Road. Trail Map
Odiorne Park State Park: various trails in woods and along shore. Also science center. 570 Ocean Boulevard, Rye. Day use fee: 12 years old and up $4, 6-11 years $2.
Bellamy River Park & Wildlife Area : 15 minutes from Portsmouth has a loop out through marshes to the river
Bellamy River Wildlife Sanctuary: 15 minutes from Portsmouth has 1.1 mile route by river
Cutts Island Trail (Rachael Carson NWR): 20 minutes from Portsmouth, 1.8 mile old road trail. The trail traverses a narrow piece of forested land with views of wetlands on either side. When you reach the end of the point, you can look out over the vast expanse of land and wetlands protected in this national wildlife refuge.
Pawtuckaway State Park: about 45 minutes from Portsmouth. A variety of trails in length and elevation change to small hill peaks of 1K feet. Day use fee: 12 years old and up $5, 6-11 years $2.
Parker River NWR: about 1 hour from Portsmouth. Numerous short trails to beaches, marsh, and other views.
